The English Bulldog is a short-legged, wide, compact, medium-sized dog. Huge in body and head, the extra skin that falls in folds from its forehead and skull is one of its distinguishing characteristics. It can weigh between 20 and 25 kilos.
The English Bulldog’s cheeks extend to the sides of the eyes. The muzzle is wide, short. Its black nose is broad with large holes. They have dark eyes and their ears are small, thin and pink. This breed of dog has a huge jaw, it is very broad and square with hanging upper lips. The tail can be straight or screwed. The coat colors are red brindle and other shades of brindle.
While the appearance of the English Bulldog can be a bit intimidating, it is among the friendliest breeds of dogs. It is a loving and trustworthy animal. It is a very persistent breed so it can be easily trained. Using repetition and reinforcement you can educate him correctly and modify some faults that he may present in his behavior. In fact some of them can become very dominant dogs.
This breed of dogs seeks human attention at every moment, they are very kind to children and are on the lookout for strangers. They are dogs that when young have a lot of energy and love to sleep. When they do, they usually snore very loudly and have drool in their mouth.
Health, diet and life expectancy
The English Bulldog can present certain breathing problems. I am very susceptible to heat stroke. Due to their sunken nose, Bulldogs do not do well in extremely hot (or cold) weather. They breathe heavily when hot and don’t dissipate heat well. They are especially susceptible to heat stroke. Therefore you must provide an environment with air conditioning and plenty of fresh water. Their vision tends to deteriorate as they age and they are prone to skin infections and hip and knee problems.
When Bulldogs are fed food that does not respond to a regular diet, they are prone to flatulence. That is why you should always try to feed them a healthy and balanced diet twice a day.
Puppies are often delivered by cesarean section. Some say it is due to the large size of the dog’s head. A large number of Bulldogs are at risk of having weak deliveries and this could increase the risk of a C-section. They usually have between 3 and 5 puppies and, on average, their life expectancy exceeds 8 years.
The English Bulldog is good for apartment living. Inside the house, they tend to be inactive, preferring to sleep until mealtime again. They love kids, but don’t expect them to spend hours chasing a ball or running around in the backyard or at the park. Your dog can participate in this type of game for a while, but then you will find him again by your side. However, remember that it is always good for your pet to get some exercise. In the case of this breed, it is recommended that you take frequent walks twice a day.
Bulldogs are not very good swimmers. Therefore, if you have a swimming pool in your house, take the relevant security measures so that your pet does not walk in that area.
