JFK Airport Creates Terminal For Animals

JFK airport creates a terminal for animals

A few weeks ago it was announced that  a luxury dog terminal will open at JFK airport in New York (United States). This area of the air terminal will take care of the more than 70,000 animals that transit that area each year.

For example, horses and cows will have climate-controlled stalls, and dogs will be able to rest in suites with TVs. There will also be a special place for penguins, which will allow them to mate in greater privacy.

Next, in this article we are going to learn a little more about this terminal  that will be found at JFK airport.

The terminal will be called The Ark and its name is inspired by the biblical figure of Noah. It will be the first air terminal for animals in the world.

With an approximate investment of 48 million dollars and with an area of 16,500 square meters,   this space will be used for pets and various animals. It will be a reception and quarantine center and will house all kinds of animals, from dogs and cats to sloths or anteaters.

Many animals that come to the United States are quarantined for a period of time (for example, horses, usually about three days) to make sure they do not have contagious diseases.

In that sense, El Arca is designed to make your stay as pleasant as possible, with lined hay stalls with capacity for 70 horses and 180 head of cattle, an aviary and pens for goats, pigs and sheep.

For dogs, the ark will offer a 1 860 m² luxury complex, with bone-shaped pools, massage service and pawdicura (a mix between “paw”, which is claw or paw, in English, and pedicure) color.

Dogs will also be able to watch flat screen TV and their owners will be able to follow their movements via webcam.

Cats, on the other hand, will have their own trees to climb.  On the other hand, all animals will have access to a 24-hour clinic, which will be run by Cornell University.

Even animals that do not need to be quarantined (for example, a huge dog that cannot enter the cabin and has to travel as cargo), will be able to spend time there, until their owners pick them up.

The Ark will be built in an old cargo terminal that has been demolished. The project is being managed by Madison Avenue Racebrook, which has signed a 32-year lease.

When the project is completed, its approval will be subject to the United States Department of Agriculture. Animals staying in this terminal must pay a specific fee depending on the services.

Dog suites, for example, could exceed $100 a night.

The transport of animals by air is not aimed at low-income owners. A flight to London for a dog can cost about $1,000, in addition to the carrier, airport fees and veterinarian certifications.

Moving a horse can go up to more than $10,000.

The project designers have had to face a number of challenges, as no similar ideas exist. For example, among many challenges are designing a system to dispose of animal waste.

The Ark will be a paradise for many animals that previously had to go through several hours of stress. Horses are one of them. They are currently being taken to a quarantine center in Newburgh, about 80 miles north of JFK Airport.

In the future, with the new terminal, the equines will be able to quarantine in that place without having to be transferred .

Undoubtedly, this possibility reassures the owners a lot since, in this way, the trip and the risk of injuries that competitors often suffer from riding a stressed horse are eliminated.
