Originally from Russia, the Russian Blue cat breed appeared in the port of Arkhangelsk in the early 19th century and was internationally known in 1871 at the Crystal Palace in London. This feline is related to other breeds such as the Korat of Thailand, the French Chartreux and the British Shorthair. Appreciated for its showy coat, it is considered one of the most elegant cats in the world.

The Russian Blue denomination became official in 1912. By those years the breed was already better known and was beginning to be popular. However, the details of the Second World War made this breed of cats diminish considerably.

In 1949 the first Russian Blue cat was registered in the Cat Breeders Association, starting from there in different competitions. Since the 1990s, the breed has won regional and international awards, and today it enjoys great recognition and popularity.
